San Fruttuoso is one of the most surprising place of the Eastern Riviera. It’s a very small fishermen’s village surrounding by very high cliffs.Here you can find the famous “San Fruttuoso Abbey”.The Monastery of “ San Fruttuoso di Capodimonte”was built in 711.During the Xth. Century,it was destroyed by Saracens’attaks and then, around the thousand years, it was rebuild by some Benedectine monks.The small bay is situated between “Punta della Torretta” in the west and the rocky and steep coast, that continues,in the east, till the Portofino’s Lighthouse.
Very interesting for its originality is the “Christ of Abysses”. It is situated at 17 metres of depth under the sea,just in front of the Abbey. The statue, is 2,5 metres high and 260 kilos weighty and it is a work of the sculptor Guido Galletti. It was fixed in 1954 on the sea –bed with a cement base that weights 60 tons.Dedicated to sea visitors and workers, the statue is a pelgrimage’s destination for divers coming from all-over the world.The monumental village of San Fruttuoso is in the middle of the coastal,rocky and picturesque landscape of the Portofino Mountain that is one of the flora’s reachest Italian place. The charm of deep seas where a singular variety of sea –flora and fauna inhabit and this beautiful village blend all together.That’s why this area is one of the most beautiful in the world.
